Milk + Bookies 3rd Annual Story Time Celebration

Milk + Bookies 3rd Annual Story Time Celebration

Over the weekend I ran into some super cool celebs at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles in support of Milk + Bookies™ Third Annual Story Time Celebration. For those unfamiliar with Milk + Bookies™, they are a national charitable organization that focuses on literacy promotion and service learning by inspiring children to give back to the community by using books as currency.

What a fun day! Invited guests of the sold-out event were treated to a day of family fun featuring story times narrated by Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), DJ Lance Rock (Yo Gabba Gabba!), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Sarah Chalke (Scrubs), Eric Stonestreet and Julie Bowen (Modern Family) reading their favorite children’s stories; creative arts & crafts by little junebugs; photo flipbooks from the super cool mobile flipbook station Now Flip This, and lunch followed by delicious McConnell’s milkshakes and Isabella’s cookies to enjoy! The pint-sized attendees were then asked to browse the free books gifted by Scholastic, Inc. at the giant “bookstore” and inscribe them with a personal message or drawing which will be donated to local children who do not have access to books through programs like School on Wheels, Ready Set Read, Boys and Girls Clubs and LA family housing.

Rainn Wilson and Gwen Stefani, were also spotted throughout the day mingling amongst the guests with their children. And there is no wonder why because at last year’s event, the celebration raised an impressive 3,000 books for foster care organizations Children’s Bureau and Westside Children’s Center.

Read, Give, Grow! I can easily say this is my favorite event so far this year and that’s saying A LOT since one of the events was with President Obama! I cannot wait until next year and I want to personally thank the Milk + Bookies team for such an exceptional event!

Throughout the year, the Milk + Bookies™ event model is available to anyone wanting to host their own book party!  For more information on how, please visit, or check out Facebook and follow on Twitter.

What was your favorite children’s story growing up?

  1. What an amazing event – and all for a good cause too!

    • They raised over 1,000 books! I’m so happy for them. Milk + Bookies throws the best event. Every kid was a rockstar for the day. I can’t wait until next year.

      • Oh..I didn’t answer the question! My favorite books growing up were Ramona and Beezus by Beverly Clearly. Harry the Dirty Dog is a classic favorite of mine too!

        • Three more…huh?! Off to CD I go!

Harry!!!! Mine was Eloise and I’m so happy that’s been Lil’ Miss Thang’s fave as well.

  2. That sounds like an amazing event!
One of my favorites growing up was The Unicorn and the Lake. Michael Hague draws amazing unicorns.

    • The best part was it was a family friendly event where I was back home by the time I’m usually heading out for these things!!! I also loved that I could bring Lil’ Miss Thang for a change.

  3. This event looks adorable! And, I love the cause. So great to see celebs with their kids giving back to the community and even more awesome that the sweet little girl in the photo got to meet her hero! 🙂

    • More like “There goes my TWO heros…” {<-See what I did there?} I can't wait until you and Lil' RockStar Princess come with us!!!

  4. That is an AWESOME event!!! Oh my goodness. I love books. And Scholastic. And celebrities. LOL. But anyway, what a great fundraiser. I don’t know what I would have done in my young life without books.

    • It was pretty awesome! The whole event was exceptional and to see your little ones playing with little Stefani/Rossdales was a trip!!!

  5. I have older teens, so I wish I could have borrowed a kid and gone. What a fun event! I love reading books.

    • Thank you for checking out the post! You should’ve seen how many tweens and teens were there! They were volunteering in costume as characters or handing out milkshakes, books – they had more fun than the wee ones!

  6. What an amazing event! And getting to meet Dave Grohl! That’s awesome! Love to see events like this that really make a difference!

    • Hi Trina, thanks for stopping by! I have been lucky to be around Mr. G a few times and he ROCKS, but this was the first time Lil’ Miss Thang met him and it was the greatest day EVER for her! To give out books and have her meet her *crush*, I’m one happy mama!!!

  7. I LOVE that so many celebs came out to support this event! Sounds like it was a great success! 🙂

    • Thanks for commenting! The turnout was amazing and I am pretty sure the parents/adults had more of a blast than the kids 🙂 The venue was also pretty wonderful!

  8. amazing event, I bet kids were super excited to see DJ Lance Rocks? My kids would be… My favorite book growing up with “milk and cookies” by Frank Asch {Bear Story} I had searched high and low for it for the longest time unsuccesful this past holiday season I did an online search and found it on amazon. Ordered it and now read it to my kids. They love it!

    • Hi Maribel, thanks for stopping by! I don’t know that story, but I’m going to check it out. Yes, DJ Lance Rock was a HUGE hit with good reason, he’s always very approachable and patient with the children making sure he sticks around to say, “hello.”

  9. Um, ok, AWESOME event. I love it when they all come together to do something really great! And I mean, jeez, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Gwen Stefani look bad. 🙂

My ABSOLUTE favorite book growing up was The Phantom Tollbooth. In fact, I STILL love reading it.

That being said I devoured books when I was a kid, so I pretty much loved everything I read. Babysitters Club Anyone?

    • Oh. My. Goodness Babysitters Club!

I’ve always thought she was an attractive woman, but Mrs. Rossdale strolled the event with such a cool style of glamour, grace and presence that it was impossible not to stare. She blew me away. I want to be her BFF.

  10. What an amazing event for such a good cause! I love seeing celebrities involved in things like this, it’s really great and quite refreshing. Love the pics of them reading the stories! Two of my favorites from Modern Family were there!

    • Modern Family ROCKS! Both Eric and Julie did amazing. I really enjoyed their stories.

  11. Get OUT with the phone and Grohl sighting.
And of course, it was for a good cause.

    • You don’t have to tell me…the man makes me feel 13 every time I see him! Never gets old.

  12. Ohhh man I am torn between DJ Lance and Dave they are BOTH equally charming adorable and CUTE OVERLOAD!!!! What a great event I would love to take Ava to more things serious THIS kind of stuff makes the world a better place – bravo celebs for pushin the books!
