Sound City | A Film By Dave Grohl
Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Rage Against the Machine, Grateful Dead, Johnny Cash, Metallica, and Nirvana have all recorded there. So has Neil Young, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Cheap Trick and Peter Frampton. It’s the Van Nuys recording studio – Sound City Studios – which sadly closed its doors to commercial recording last May. Imagine for a second the kinds of things that happened within those studio walls. I’m certain a lot of drugs, sex, and rock and roll magic. Fans will get to hear the stories on what it was like recording legendary albums like Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors and Nirvana’s iconic Nevermind in the upcoming documentary Sound City the movie.
It was confirmed yesterday that Foo Fighters frontman – and former Nirvana drummer – will direct and produce the feature-length film. It has been rumored that he was inspired to share Sound City’s history after purchasing a custom Neve 8028 console before the studio closed. Along with chronological history of the studio and the albums that were recorded there, Grohl recruited musicians like Tom Petty, Rick Springfield, Lars Ulrich, Stevie Nicks, and Grammy winning producer Butch Vig to sit down and talk about their experiences at Sound City. Grohl says “Like the dark hallways of Sound City Studios itself, it might not be pretty…but it’s for f***ing real.”
From the Desk of Dave Grohl:
This will be Grohl’s directorial debut. Editor Paul Crowder (Dogtown & Z Boys, Once In a Lifetime, Riding Giants) and Writer Mark Monroe (The Cove, Once In a Lifetime, The Tillman Story) are also on board. The film is being produced in conjunction with Jim Rota, John Ramsay, and Therapy studios and will be distributed by Roswell Films.

A release date for Sound City has not been announced it but Vig told Rolling Stone he’s “hoping that we’ll get it finished and mixed in the fall…to have it come out early next year, like January or February or something like that.”
