Happy Hour :: Nobhill Tavern by Michael Mina

I love fine dining with its sophisticated menus and top-notch service – really, it’s the way to my heart and it’s how I like to spend an evening.  Last weekend, during The Trend Tribe’s Influencer Weekend in Las Vegas, we enjoyed some serious fine dining at some of the city’s most prestigious establishments and all of it was off-the-charts phenomenal.  But while I love to spend my evening in the finest restaurants, I like to end them in the tavern.  Saturday night’s last stop with the Tribe was at Nobhill Tavern by Michael Mina at the MGM Grand.

Nobhill Tavern by Michael Mina features the chef’s interpretation of classic American tavern fare.  Tavern fare?  Think bar food but Nobhill Tavern and its executive chef Josh Crain take buffalo wings, fries, and sliders to the next level.  We sampled almost every dish from their “All Night Happy Hour” menu which appears exclusively in the bar Tuesday – Friday from 5:30pm to close.

Let’s first talk drinks.  The restaurant’s happy hour menu offers red or white wine by the glass for $6 and hand-crafted cocktails for the same price.  We had been sampling cocktails all weekend and followed suit at Nobhill Tavern.  Katy and I licked the sugared rim of the Marcella made of Don Julio tequila, elderflower liqueur, fresh lemon all shaken and served over ice.  It was truly one of the best drinks I had all weekend.  Cocktails were trumped as soon as I read that the bar served PBR – yep, that’s right – Pabst Blue Ribbon, in an ice cold can for $3.  Sold.  Nothing goes better with beer-battered shrimp than, well, beer.

The snacks and finger foods from the happy hour menu were incredible and on-point in terms of price.  Duck Fat Fries with a truffle aioli, the market salad with drunken goat cheese and candied pecans, crispy chicken wings slathered in a Korean BBQ sauce, beer-battered shrimp coupled with a crazy delicious avocado lime puree for dipping, and bangers and mash with an onion jus.  All of these plates are only $6.  Six dollars!  Where else are you going to find exceptional food from a James Beard award winning chef for this price?  The menu also features oysters at market price as well as a variety of classic burgers for a couple bucks more.

What did I like best?  This might be a “Sophie’s Choice” moment.  I loved the Duck Fat Fries dipped in a horseradish-cocktail sauce that accompanied the oysters.  I also really loved the bangers and mash which isn’t exactly “American” fare but, damn, it was so good.  And finally, because I’m obsessed with goat cheese, I adored the market salad.  The highlight of the evening was when Nobhill Tavern General Manager, Ed Tracy, swooped in with the cans of PBR.  It was just the perfect surprise to an already perfect happy hour.

  4. What a fun time! I loved being all dressed up, but enjoying bar food, drinking everything from the mules to the PBR and downing oysters, then the most fabulous drunken goat cheese salad! Nobhill Tavern was the perfect mix for me!
