Bucket List #23 :: I wanna be in Rolling Stone.
I can remember the first Rolling Stone I ever picked up. It was 1987 and Lisa Bonet graced the cover. It was in that instance that I swore to myself and to any rock gods within an earshot, that one day I would be featured in Rolling Stone. Fast forward 25 years later. Oh man. Is this my big break? Hyundai Santa Fe and Rolling Stone are on a mission to find the perfect #MyFamilyRocks role models and this fam gladly accepts the challenge! I promise, we will make you proud.
“Wanna see my picture on the cover, wanna buy five copies for my mother, wanna see my smilin’ face, on the cover the cover of the Rolling Stone.” – Shel Silverstein
To qualify, Hyundai and Rolling Stone wants to know “How does your family rock?” I’m proud to say our reputation precedes us on this one. Not only is music playing in our home 24/7, but it is not uncommon that once the dishes are done, baths are taken, teeth are brushed, bedtime stories are read, and goodnight kisses are handed out like candy, we are hightailing it to The Sunset Strip for some big-name rock and roll. Our family is quite serious about live entertainment. Last week, our social diary resembled something like: Saturday afternoon – Yo Gabba Gabba Live!, Monday night – Soundgarden at Jimmy Kimmel, and Saturday night – Private Bon Jovi performance on the Paramount Studios backlot. This fam does not joke around when music is on the agenda!
The Life + Times of a Rock and Roll Family.
The littlest member of our rock and roll trio loves the lifestyle as well. Even at the ripe old age of 5, she has developed an amazing ear for good music. Behind a drum kit perfecting her inner Dave Grohl with a twist of Animal from The Muppets, she has found her calling. Her favorite bands are The Beatles and the Foo Fighters, and not only did we begin transforming her room into her very own Octopus Garden, but last April, wee drummer met her idol, Mr. Dave Grohl. What a HUGE moment as a parent to witness such an introduction. I still get chills when I look at the photos.
Did I mention her world is a stage? During a G.Love performance, she didn’t miss a beat and took it upon herself to jump on that stage to sing Baby’s Got Sauce and Jungle Gym while dancing. She has stolen the heart of Biz Markie when she asked if she could ‘beat box’ for him and each time DJ Lance Rock has spotted her, he’s scooped her up and screamed, “WE’RE AWWWWWWESOME!!!!“ She certainly has the ‘rock and roll’ gene. Whether it is the fact that her first concert ‘in-utero’ was the Foo Fighters at the Pantages, or how she tried to sit in First Class with Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, this child is a legend.

As a family, we taught our daughter the A-B-C’s by reading the children’s book ‘M is for Metal’ which I have since had signed by everyone from Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains, Dave Grohl of Nirvana/Foo Fighters, and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, to Motorhead’s Lemmy, members of Guns N’ Roses, Led Zeppelin, and Jane’s Addiction.
Professionals by day, hubs + I value our quality time and dedicate date nights to watching Morrissey at the Hollywood Bowl, Sunday mornings dancing to Arcade Fire’s Keep the Car Running, and settle our disputes over a game of Guitar Hero. We are the quintessential #MyFamilyRocks! Backstage, on-stage, or in a backyard with President Obama watching the Foo Fighters, front and center for an intimate show with Jack White at a market in LA, or checking out Camp Freddy with Sex Pistol’s Steve Jones and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith at the Roxy on Sunset, we attend at least 20 shows a year and wouldn’t have it any other way.
#MyFamilyRocks because we make time for our community as well. Our family has been members of The GRAMMY Museum since 2007, support charities such as Matt Sorum’s rockin’ Adopt The Arts, Milk + Bookies, and Flea’s Silverlake Conservatory. Last month, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy I founded ‘East Meets West’ an online Facebook relief drive were we divided our closest friends, family, fellow bloggers, and strangers between ‘TEAM TUPAC’ (west coast) and ‘TEAM BIGGIE’ (east coast). The collaboration is still thriving and to date, ‘Tupac’ has sent over 40 boxes and hundreds of dollars of gift cards back to ‘Biggie’ aiding those directly affected by Hurricane Sandy.
In it to win it.
So does your fam rock also? How? Maybe it’s car dancing or acting a fool. Maybe you practice yoga together or sing lip sync in the mirror. If you rock, you can ENTER HERE and upload a photo of your fam getting your groove on and telling why #MyFamilyRocks in 500 words or less. Prizes include a photo shoot in Rolling Stone by an industry photographer, airfare, hotel and transportation to the 55th GRAMMY Awards, and a brand-new customized rock ‘n’roller Hyundai Santa Fe. Contest ends December 14th, 2012.
Believe it or not, these are just some of our stories. One day remind me to share how Eric Clapton + I used to walk to work with each other, or the time Thom Yorke asked for my chair during lunch. Ha! And then there is that time I made a complete fool of myself in front of Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin. Oh, have I got stories. See. I told you #MyFamilyRocks and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
